HARRY NIXON

1.1 Research photographers images

This photo was taken by Andrew Hurteau. The image is of a pot that has been broken and pieced back together. It is a photo sequence because it is the same pot but from left to right it is a before and after. The rule of thirds is used as you can see the same pot being pictured three times. The use of negative space is used to separate the subject so they can be told apart from each other. The image has been edited so they have cut all three images and merged them into one image.

This photo was taken by Adrian Bertschi. The image captures a bird flying. It’s a sequence because it shows the Bird flying and in motion. The use of negative space is displayed to show the motion and freedom of the Bird.

This Photo was taken by Alan Roderick. The Photographer has captured a dancer in the three images, Showing the motion of the dancer.

He has used a tripod and a long exposure to create the feeling of motion which is shown in the out of focus images.  He has used a four second shutter speed, as this will open the shutter and allow the dancer to be captured in the free motion.

This photo is by Andrew Hurteau. He is an image maker who likes to use photography to tell a story.  This photo is sequential as its showing the series of a pot, which is  then broken in the middle of the image, followed by it being fixed  but still has its few cracks in.  There is positive and negative space, the black surrounding this being the negative.  The photo is framed horizontally  with simple monochrome colours. The shutter speed is relatively high for this as it needed to capture a clear crisp shot of the broken pottery. This photo has been enhanced in photoshop.  I love the small  glimmer of gold cracks in the pot, I think that tells a story and means something. Nothing I dislike.

This is Steven Wilkes’s very impressive day to night sequence. This is two photos merged together. Steven Wilkes graduated with a bachelor of science in photography, and is recognized for brilliant editing skills and commercial work. We see the scenery of day, and as we follow the photo we then see the night life. There is a few examples of line in this photo, such as horizontal, diagonal,  converging. The converging lines imply depth here, and distance, creating interest for the viewer. We also see the colours of daytime are more neutral, relaxed, and as the night shows its more colourful and busyThis was most likely a faster shutter speed used to freeze all the people, movement, and intricacies of this scene. This has been edited by two photos from different times of day, and merged together, creating this effect that it’s all in the same photo. There is nothing I dislike about this.

This is an emotional sequence by Greg Orlov. We see a man showing quite dramatic emotion here.  He is shocked  with his hand over his mouth, then he has his head in his hands in despair, then we see him with his head down, sad, emotionless, possibly empty. There is a lot of negative space in this, creating wonderful contrast. The lighting is also subtle and the colours are black and white which maximizes the mood. This is one of those sequential photos that create impact. The shutter speed will be relatively fast, and this would have been carefully done to create the exact emotions. The one thing I dislike is Greg could of done one more emotion or added another part to this sequence.

ABBY REYNOLDS. UNIT 2

1.1 Research Photographers’ images.

1.2  Describe the photographers’ methods and use of visual language

this image is of cony island. Its mainly a beach with a carnival  thing going on. The photographer is stephen wilkes.  Stephen Wilkes is an American photographer born in 1957. He started photography at the age of 12. Then, he studied at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in photography.   An example of sequential photography in this photo is that the people are going to either the carnival or the beach. Im not so sure on the shutter speed but im guessing maybe a fast shutter speed to make the image look clear o make the image slower so it gets the image of the people or the carnival lights. The photos have been edited with lighting for sure. I like that the image is very cheerful with the lights and everything I don’t really like the sky coloure in the back where the building blocks are. Almost looks like a thunder storm or rain storm.

Photographer Duane Michals to talk at W&M on March 19 | William & Mary  this image is of the bathroom and the book story. The photographer is Daune michealsDuane Michals is an American photographer who’s work is largely based around photo-sequences, often incorporating text to examine emotion and philosophy. From Wikipedia : Though he has not been involved in gay civil rights, his photography has addressed gay themes. An example of sequential photography is that daune has the images of the bathroom but it looks like its in a book then it looks like ist in a picture frame then its real. The shutter speed again probably fast as the images would of needed to be took quick because of the way he wanted the photos to turn out. The lighting has been edited again. I like the way the photos have been sorted out and I also like the way he tells the story.

This image is of the man and the 3 emotions. The photographer is
greg orlovAn example of sequential photography is that he is stood in a line showing his different emotions witch looks like shocked

fustrated and sad. The shutter speed used is again probably slow as the photos need time to be taken for these kind of shots. The lighting has definatley been edited. I like the way the photos show his different emotions but the photos could have alos been a little bit lighter along with more emotions.

2.1  Develop ideas using a range of sources

The images ive chose are all images of sequential photography all show either a sport or a daily task some people normally do during the day. An idea of a good sequential photogropher is daune michals. His art is really inspiring just to look at along with stephen wilkes who made a piece of art of a carnival kinda thing on cony island witch is a famous american place. Coney Island is a peninsular neighborhood and entertainment area in the southwestern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The neighborhood is bounded by Brighton Beach to its east, Lower New York Bay to the south and west, and Gravesend to the north, and includes the subsections of Sea Gate to its west and Brighton Beach to its east.

A day in the life of lockdown. Abby reynolds

I deas : sleep  walking  studying   dancing  looking out the window  cooking   makeup   chores.

start off with day one .. a task for each day.

Day 1.

Lockdown take 2. Theres nothing much to do considering were in lockdown again. National lockdown this time and for most people including me im sick of all this too. So what could be bettere than just to sleep right. Some days im acctually not that lazy .. i get up and do things .. cook make breakfast study .. But all that comes soon:} Mainly when im not doing all these things i sit and watch netflix or mainly doctor who. A personal faveourite. But like i said others days im really productive.. and do things around my home.

Day 2.

Walking. The activity is pretty fun i mean you walk about all the time weather it be indoors or out sometimes tho i like to just walk in the woods explore nature a little or just walk about outside for fresh air. Not many people like walking far some do .. i like going on long hikes and exploring new things for sure. It takes my mind of alot of things supprisingly. Maybe thats a main thing for most people the more they walk or something the more there mind starts to wounder and ofc its not a bad thing .. maybe your a youtuber looking for ideas but instead you go on a walk and ideas come flooding through your barin quicker .. or you could be doing course work and need some more ideas for the paragraph your writing. It all helpes when you think about it.

Day 3.

Studying. Ilike to study alot it helps with things i have to catch up on or revise. It sometimes can be stressfull but thats all with the studying process i guess. It can be really easy at times tho . Like if your studying for an exam on something you know really well then of course your gonna get what your studying about staright away. But other times its not that simple. You could be studying math and like me im nooo good at the subject. Some nights i sit and read books and that helps alot because well it gives me ideas for maybe a writing task in english or just to write about anything.

Day 4.

Dancing isnt really my thing unless im bored and want to just prance about in my bedroom. Or as most teenagers my age .. they dance on tiktok. I used to dance in like year 6 or something but that was when i was really into dancing .. now i just kinda take the miky out of dancing.

Day 5.

Looking out the window. This has got to be my favourite thing. Im litarally sat at the window just staring out. And even tho its the same view as before i just imagen what it would be like if it wasnt. Like the sea or the clouds .. I normally sit out the window at night just to gaze at the stars or the moon . Its very relaxing when you have alot on your mind and want to just forget .. just sit at the window and gaze at the stars or the moon {when its out}.

Day 6.

Chores. Got to love parents when you just finish something like homework and you want to relax and they come in your room and their like go down stairs and wash the pots for me .. Like sure cause i wanna rest today . Sometimes thats not the case tho i mean i will go do the chores when im bored or havent got homework to do. Some times i get asked other times i dont or mostly i dont do them because im forever changing the way my room looks.

Day 7.

Ive never really been a big fan of makeup. But its weird because growing up ive always wanted makeup and to look pretty. My first ever makeup kit i got was from my grandad a long time ago and he said you kept asking so i got you it for christmas. I was sooo happy with it and to this day the case that it came in i still have filled with other make up items. Im not really a lover of make up .. sure i have a daft half an hour with it and mess on with eye shadow but i dont wear it every day like most people do. Its more my sister who loves the make up more than me but she acts like more of a girl then me.

Day 8.

Excersize. sometimes when i have nothing on okay i go for a run or a jog and its really relaxing. Sure you fel skinny after it because maybe you havent been for a run in a while but its really fun. You can even do excersizes aroung the house when your bored like run up and down the stairs 3 times or something or run about in your back or front garden 3 times .. Maybe you just want to eat healthy so like you could have a salad some nights or just something healthy. Its all really intresting when it comes to it because many people have some inspiring ideas maybe on instagram to have a look at or just use the internet.

Day 9.

Music. Music has always been a faveourite thing of mine and a big part of my life. From being a baby to now id always want to discover new music or new types of music and the music id find id always be really interested in. When i was about 12 i loves micheal jackson and every song id listen to would be of his. Then as i grew up it was an american rappy XXXTentacion. id be obbsessed with his music and still am to this day . Now as most people know im obbsessed with the band The1975 and of course my faveourite person Matty Healy. Xs music helps with depression and just mental health really and the 1975s helps me when i want to get out of my mood and be happy :].

Last day 10.

I love how you’ve approached this Abby and what I’ve done here is suggest how you can turn some of these into separate sequences:

Idea 1:

CHORES: Photograph the pile of washing up waiting to be done.

Take a photo of you preparing the sink with water and washing up liquid.

Take a photo of the pots in the washing up bowl and then the pots all drying on the side...

and if you put them away after show the clear space where the mess once was!

Idea 2:  EVERY CORNER

On your walk take a photo of every corner you turn.  So every time you get to a corner – take a photo showing it.  Think. about what to show - treat these as landscape photos so they are nice long / wide shits showing background such as roads, houses street signs, etc.

Idea 3: MUSIC

Take a series of selfies as you listen to your music to capture your reactions and even you singing.  You could even video yourself and then we could get freeze frames from the video.

Above are the 2 ideas Abby presented to  class for feedback.

JACOB WILSON

This image is of a box, the photographer used a burst image, to capture the launch of the box in stages.

The photographer is called Andrew Miller

I couldn’t find him on the internet

This is a good example of how burst photography works, the rapid image capture, and then using photoshop to compile multiple images together. This shows the trajectory of the box, and the distance it went.

The formal elements are used in this image to bring, the colours are well saturated, high in contrast, they. The boxes and dust help to create a curved line, to draw our eye to the box on the floor, like a pathway.

The image has a large depth of field because everything is in focus, it has used a very fast shutter speed, if it was slow the box would blurry.

Yes it has been edited, there is at least 5 different photos in this image, they have been edited together in photoshop, so that it looks like 1 photo capturing the journey of the box.

I like how the image shows the height and distance of the box

This image is of a man jumping, he used burst to capture his fall in a series of atleast 5 photos.

This was a photo on flikr, a photo sharing website.

We don’t know anything about the image taker.

Horizontal lines draw our eyes to the foreground of the picture, which is where the action is taking place, colours make the figure stand out from the natural landscape.

The image has a slightly more shallow depth of field than the previous image, this is because the people in the background are blurred and it makes him stand out more

It has been edited digitally in photoshop, so that at least 5 images become one.

I don’t like how the image show the jumper so up close and fails to capture much else.

This image is of coney island in new York, it is made up of thousands of images taken throughout a 12 hour period.

The photographer is Stephen Wilkes, he specializes in images like this.

He has compiled thousands of images together of the same location over a small period of time to create one image, showing the area at night and at the same time day.

The image is split between negative and positive space, the sky is empty, however the ground is full.

The lines create a zig zag affect, dragging your eyes to the fairground. It has a large depth of field so that the entire landscape can be seen.

The image has been heavily edited digitally in photoshop, where he has been able to piece together the entire image.

At first, I didn’t realise the image went from day to night, I like how the image has been edited and I respect the time and effort it must have taken.

Task 2 ideas

Day in the life of me

I am going to take a picture every hour of the day from when I get out of bed to when i go to sleep. The pictures will show different activities I do during the day to show what my normal daily routine is.

Lava lamp, I will take pictures of a lava lamp during its cycle of warming up and cooling down. Will show the changes in the lamp

Clouds, I will take pictures of the clouds throughout a 1 hour period during a cloudy day, take 10 in colour will show how the earth moves

Sunset, I will take images of the sunset every 10 minutes. Take 12 over 2 hours this will show the cycle of dusk

Dog, I will take pictures of my dog throughout a walk. Take 10. This will show the changes in the surroundings and in the cleanliness of the dog

A week of weather, take 2 pictures a day, one in the day and one at night this will show the weekly weather pattern

Take a picture of a download as it gets further and further along. Eg an update for a game. This will show the speed and length of the download

A cake, take a picture of a cake in the oven as it bakes. Take one every 5 minutes this will show the cake rising as it bakes

Freezing, take pictures of something as it freezes once every half hour something such as water or as something melts like an ice cube, this will show the changes in, structure, size and temperature

Tide, take pictures as the tide comes in or goes out. Probably up from the cliffs. Take as man as I need to get the best visual differences in each image. This will show the sand become engulfed by the water throughout a sequence of pictures

My work was presented to the group, I got some feedback from the class, they said that the dog sequence was amusing and funny and clearly told a story. The sandwich photos again told a story. Harry said he liked the pattern of the cucumbers and the use of colour. I decided after looking at the work from other class members that I could make a more creative intriguing set of images, I am going to develop the lava lamp images as my final shoot. I will use the same location and the same camera, I will keep the lights down and take 15 photographs as it warms up. I may take a second set of 15 images as it cools down.

Lava lamp idea, take images of lava lamp in a dark environment throughout the cycle of it heating up.

Take 1 picture every 10 minutes

GURPREET KHALSA

The reason I love this image because it shows what sequential photography is about without any confusion. You can easily understand what the photo is showing us. It’s so easy that anybody can do it. To be honest, I don’t have a clue how the photographer created that image and made it look amazing. But it has inspired me to do something like that and I will try my best to create it.

Vanishing man

I have showed my images to students and teachers that are in my class through Teams and they gave me feedback about my sequential photography ideas. The first photo I showed was an image of my shoe image in black and white. In my second idea, I was showing my different type of personality by cloning my myself and putting it in one picture. My last one was about hiding parts of me. The clear ones are what I want people to see and the blurred ones are about what I’m really like and I don’t want people to see it. The feedback was brilliant from my class. For the first one, Rachel talks about black and white works really well and there are different shapes in the image to attract the eye. She also talked about how such a simple story makes sense and looks interesting. Adele also mentioned the same thing that “it's something so simple made interesting.” For the second photo, everyone really liked it and it was really cool. Harry said that he really liked the use of colours and for the last one, everyone also loved this one especially the last image because it looks very mysterious and secretive and the reason is that you couldn’t see my face at all in it. Sophie mentioned that the images show a range of different stories and the framing used draws the eyes in search for meaning. I don’t know which one the class liked the most but, in my opinion, I think they liked the last one because it tells more than one story when you look at it. They didn’t give me any suggestions on how to develop my ideas and I don’t they need to because in my opinion, my pictures look fantastic as the way that they are. I am not going to use any of pictures from task 4 for my final photoshoot. I’m doing a completely new sequential idea for my final photoshoot.

I was exploring sequential photography and I have done research into different photographers such as: Kim Taylor, Dan Carr, Andrew Gilmore and many more. I also looked at their images to explore my ideas. I created 10 different sequential photography ideas and chose 3 of them for my shoot. For my first idea, I made a story of: wearing my socks, putting my shoes on, tying the laces and walking away. After I took the images, I went to photoshop to put them in a portrait frame in order so it would make sense. I didn’t edit them at all because I want my work to look as natural as possible. My second idea was, I took three pictures together and in the first one, it was just me looking in the camera. For the second photo, the cameras on 10” shutter speed and I just kept shaking my head. For the last image, it was on 30” shutter speed and it almost looked like I disappeared, but you could see my necklace and jumper. For the last and my favourite shoot, I wanted to do something better than my last two ideas, so I decided that I was going to show different sides of me in the same photo. I did that by putting the camera on the tripod and it was landscape. The camera was on 10 sec timers, so I would put the camera on a timer and stand in front of it and make an expression. I changed into another outfit and did the same thing for about 5 times. Then I went to photoshop and it took me a long time to put them together. I received feedback about my images form everyone that was doing the project and their opinions helped me to decide my final photoshoot. My final shoot was the hardest one out of all the shoots I have done so far. I went to Redcar and stood on the top of the highest sand dune and told my friend to take my continuous photos as I jump from the top. I thought to myself that it would be easy and there is nothing to worry about as I did it before. So, I jumped, and I should have landed on my feet, but I fell on my hip and got covered in sand. It was disgusting, but It was worth. I did the same thing with these images as I did with my 3rd sequential photography idea when I went to Photoshop. When I finished editing it, it looked amazing! That was my best work so far and I don’t think I could do any better. If I could do the photoshoot again, I would probably pick a lower sand dune and add another sequence of me in the image. I have enjoyed this project so much that I can’t describe in words because it pushed me out of my boundaries and did a lot of hard work to make the images look fabulous.
